The Al Ali family and the Mimico Tulip Festival

Al Ali family @ Tulip FestivalThe Al Ali family are enjoying their new neighbourhood. Here they are at the Mimico Tulip Festival, in front of the MBC tulip. The flower theme that our youth group designed and painted was inspired by the Al Alis.
“I was a stranger and you welcomed me.”  Mt 25:35

They’ve arrived!

Welcome from MRR

Yay, they’re finally here! Three hours after touching down, they walked through the sliding glass doors and saw Nelly, with sign, right in front of them. All four of them were very happy and receptive. There were lots of hugs and a few tears, too.  They are overjoyed by the apartment and the lake, as they had no idea what to expect. We left them at 9pm to settle in and sleep.

Nelly and I will be checking in on them tomorrow afternoon. Raymonde and Paul are going to spend time in the neighbourhood with them on Sat. We’ve got appointments booked on Monday and Tuesday with our settlement worker and with TDSB. The rest, we’ll figure out as we go.
We’ll have more to share soon. A few photos, as well.
Well done folks. I think we can all feel good about our efforts and our blessings. Amen.
Peace be upon you,

Family is delayed till Wednesday

Our sponsored family was originally scheduled to arrive today. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, their flight has been delayed till Wednesday afternoon. We hope to welcome them then as they settle into their new home. Details to follow.

Our family is coming!

Our family arrives on Monday! We’re excited to host and support our new friends as they make their way to Canada. Also, the oldest son is now married, so only four of them are now coming.
There is still a lot that will need happen (with appointments, assessments and so much more) after they arrive. More details to come.

Our family’s coming soon!

We received word from James Maloney’s office that our family was approved on March 15 and the documents that they require to travel to Canada should be on the way to them in Jordan. We’re not sure when they’ll arrive exactly, but this is one step closer!

MRR: Family Confirmed

Things are picking up! The family has been confirmed – and they will be here in a few weeks! We are so excited. Two parents and their three sons – we can’t wait to meet them.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO HELP: follow the link to our sign up sheet, we have lots of household items that we’d like to help furnish their new home.

Thank you in advance for your generosity!

Exciting Update!! We have a tentative match!

We have been tentatively matched to a Syrian family of five. They are currently in Jordan. Parents and three teen aged sons, 18, 17 and 15 who all speak Arabic. We are waiting for the application forms and a more detailed profile. Apparently they are not yet travel ready but have a high priority rating. Will let you know more info as we get it. We are ramping up exploration of housing possibilities.

Interim Housing Needed

Happy New Year! We hope that the Christmas season was a meaningful one for you all. A few updates:

THANK YOU!!! Our donations have reached $25,000 and we are amazed at the generosity! Many have donated furniture and many more have offered – hang in there for updates on this.

Our Sponsorship Partner, the Canadian Baptists of Ontario & Quebec, is starting to receive new families for matching, so we are getting ready to kick into high gear.

Our most immediate need is INTERIM HOUSING – as well as potential long-term housing – for our family in South Etobicoke. please send us a message if you are aware of a place.

MRR: Update on Dec 21/15

(from Jan O’Hearn, co-chair)

Emails, posters and flyers have been passed throughout the neighborhood. We’ve had a great response from the Mimico community. Jim and I have started to collect furniture and the locker is half full already.

Birds &. Beans, Lakeshore Arts, Mimico Children’s Choir, LAMP, Humber College, Red Tree Hot Yoga, Councillor Mark Grimes, MPP Peter Milczyn and MP James Maloney are all eager to support our efforts. We’ve already received free storage space from StorWell.

The financial response has been incredible. As of last Tuesday, we’ve received $11,500. We also got word that a grant from the Lawson Foundation ($10,000) has been approved and the cheque is in the mail! Kudos to Heather for inspiring this amazing gift.

Jennifer and I attended an info session with the Arab Community Centre of Toronto (ACCT). Very informative and a major reality check about what lays ahead. Their government-funded services are very extensive and I have contacted them to start the process of getting a settlement officer assigned to our group. Though we won’t have a family match until the new year, they are eager to help us in our preliminary preparations.

I would also strongly recommend that everyone reads Lifeline Syria’s Sponsorship Handbook. The breakdown of prep tasks is very comprehensive and a bit overwhelming.

Mimico neighbours have expressed an interest in organizing some sort of musical fundraising event in the future. Let Jim know if you want to connect with them or have other fundraising ideas.

Alvin and I are going to update our furniture wish list so it can be posted on the website and Facebook. Heather, are you working on one for housewares that we can post as well? We can start collecting and storing these in the locker. Offers are coming in by phone and email and we’ve already accepted a few. Let me know when you want an update on this.

I think that’s all for now. Blessings to all,

Mimico Refugee Response now LIVE
