Summer 2018 services

July 1 Canada Day: Faith, in Canada (Luke 13:29) Canada is rich in diversity. This is certainly true when with views on faith and religion. There is a vast diversity of choice, yet one of the fastest growing groups are those who embrace no religion. In such a context, how do we declare and demonstrate the person and message of Christ. How to we navigate our present to help shape our country’s future?

July 8: The Right Judge (Nahum 1:2-10) The world doesn’t seem right; it feels like there’s so much injustice. In the midst of that, God is faithful to judge rightly. (with Rev. Alvin Lau)

July 15: Judging Rightly (Nahum 1:11-3:19) As we continue with Nahum, we see God’s seemingly severe judgement on Assyria. Sometimes we feel like we want to be vindicated in the same way. Yet there’s another side of the coin to consider, just as Nahum’s people did at that time. (with Rev. Alvin Lau)

July 22: Hope for the Bully(ed) (Nahum 3:18-19) In our world right now, bullying is a significant issue, for both the bullied and the bully. Our service will include an extended time of prayer for the oppressed and their oppressors. (with Rev. Alvin Lau)

(No recording available.)

July 29: Blessed (Psalm 1) This first of the Psalms points to the path of blessing. You are invited to be like a tree planted by streams of water and yielding much fruit. What path are you on?

(No recording available.)

August 5: Reaching out in hospitality (Hebrews 13:2) We cannot underestimate the positive impact of the ministry of hospitality. “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it“. Hospitality was a vital ministry of Christ and the early church. It is an important ministry of our Church in this community. We have a team of people dedicated to this vital ministry. We will consider the possibilities of both being a guest and being a host.

(No recording available.)

August 12: Chosen Priests (Leviticus 9:1-24) Every Christian has a position of the chosen priests in the world, so we should listen to God’s words and obey God, so that our worship will glorify God and bless people. (with Peter Qi)

(No recording available.)

August 19: Can it be? (Acts 9:20-31) When Paul (Saul) began his public ministry, as a new Christian, people were astonished at the change in him. This coming week we will hold our Holiday Club and consider the unimaginable, yet wonderful things that God can do. With a solid hope, we dare to dream and to do what Christ makes possible.

August 26: Unimaginable Events (Ephesians 3:20-21) This service follows our Holiday Club and takes us into the lessons shared with the community.

September 2: (with Rev. Alvin Lau) The Rhythm of Life (TBA) Summer is almost over (unofficially). Hopefully you’ve had some moments to rest, moments to work and moments to be with God. As the kids join us in our worship service, let’s discover together what God has for us this morning through our worship, our prayers and his worship.

Summer Services 2017

July 2: “Walking the Waves” (John 6:16-24) with Pastor Jim

July 9: The composer of “Abide with Me” wrote a line many of us can relate to. “Change and decay in all around I see.” In our world we see changes happening so quickly and constantly. Some change is good: but at the same time, we need things in our lives that are permanent, that we can count on. In Malachi 3 :6, God says, “I am the Lord, I change not.” We will look at what that means for us. With Jan Thomas (our Choir Director and author of two books)
Devotional thought: What things about God’s unchanging nature do I appreciate most?  What changes has God performed in my life?

July 16: “Keep Building” (Haggai 1) Atrophy can be defined as “gradually decline in effectiveness or vigor due to underuse or neglect”. Summer can sometimes lead towards spiritual atrophy. This morning, we join the Israelites in Haggai’s call towards atrophy. May we respond as they did. With Alvin Lau

Devotional thought: What’s one practice you learned in the last couple of months that you need to keep building on?

July 23: “Good Ol’ Days .. Days to Come” (Haggai 2) Do you remember the good ol’ days? How does it compare to the present? Sometimes, we look back with fondness to what happened before. We may even lament why it isn’t like that now. We’ll continue with Haggai and the return of the Israelites and see what God’s word to them was … and is for us today.

Devotional thought: How do you think God will continue to spur you forward? (What do you need to be involved)?

July 30: “Missing the Point” (John 6:25-70) with Pastor Jim

August 6: “The Real Showbread” (John 6:35) Bread is a significant part of our Christian understanding. In the NIV
Bible, it shows up 271 times. Let’s explore the richness of what Jesus meant when he said he’s the bread of life. With
 Alvin Lau

August 13: “Still Looking” (John 7) with Pastor Jim

August 20: “Trapped?” (John 8:1-11) with Pastor Jim

August 27: “Ancient Paths” (Jeremiah 6:16) Holiday Club Service with Pastor Jim

September 3: “Remember These” (Joshua 3-4) “Do you remember …” To reminisce is to recall what’s happened
before. Around your home, you probably have pictures or other memorabilia that bring back fond memories (and maybe some not-so-fond ones). We’ll look at an event in Israel’s history, and explore how God cements that specific point in time for generations to come (and why). With
 Alvin Lau

Devotional thought: What helps you to remember God’s faithfulness and promises? (Be specific as you list them.)
